An IPSW (iPhone Software) file is Apple's firmware format used to install iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and other Apple operating systems. These files contain the complete operating system and are used for updates, restores, and downgrades when signed by Apple.

To install an IPSW file, connect your Apple device to a computer with iTunes or Finder. On macOS, hold the Option key (Shift key on Windows) while clicking the "Update" or "Restore" button. You can only downgrade to versions that are currently being signed by Apple. Typically, Apple only signs the current version and sometimes the previous version for a short period after a new release. Once Apple stops signing a version, downgrading to that version is no longer possible through standard methods.
